Local EU Statement on two executions in Malaysia

The European Union Delegation and the EU Heads of Mission in Malaysia issue the following statement:

On 15 March 2017, two Malaysian citizens, Suthar Batumalai and B. Rames Batumalai, were executed in Malaysia.

The European Union reiterates its strong and principled position against the death penalty in all circumstances. The death penalty is a cruel and inhumane punishment which fails to act as a deterrent to crime. Furthermore, any errors - inevitable in any legal system - are irreversible. We will continue our active pursuit of its abolition worldwide.

The European Union, therefore, urges Malaysia to stop all executions and to institute a moratorium on capital punishment pending its stated intention to review the death penalty.
